Work

My work sits at the intersection of data, technology, strategy and design — always in service of social purpose. I help organisations ask better questions, make sense of complexity, and build the tools and infrastructure they need to act on what they learn.

I’m a trained coach, advisor and occasional speaker. I run The Good Ship, a consultancy focused on strategy, technology and resilience for social purpose organisations. Previously I co-founded Data for Action, where we spent three years exploring what good data infrastructure looks like for the social sector.

I’ve been lucky to work with some brilliant organisations along the way — Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Lloyds Bank Foundation, ClientEarth, Power to Change, SOS, NPC, Wildlife Trusts, and various government departments including NHS England, and the Cabinet Office, among others.

What I do

The work is varied, which I think is a feature not a bug — it gives me context across how people and organisations actually work.

  • AI & Technology Strategy — Responsible AI adoption, digital sovereignty, helping organisations see their technology clearly
  • Data Strategy & Architecture — From storytelling to infrastructure, making data useful and usable
  • Organisational Resilience — Frameworks and programmes for navigating uncertainty
  • Open Infrastructure — Building shared digital tools for the sector
  • Learning Partnerships & Coaching — One-to-one development, team learning, advisory relationships

Things I’ve built

I believe in building real things alongside advisory work. Here are some of the tools and products I’ve made:

The List
Track and monitor changes to UK grant and foundation funding opportunities. Get notifications about changes, eligibility criteria, grant windows and application deadlines.
Open Recommendations
A shared, searchable repository where reports and recommendations live on — helping the sector build on past work instead of starting from scratch.
Map My Patch
Combine the power of questions and maps. Draw shapes, collect responses, and analyse geographic insights all in one platform.
Questions for Action
A tool to help teams organise, assess and prioritise the questions that matter most — because asking the right question is half the answer.
llmstxt.social
AI-readable documentation for social purpose organisations. Making the sector visible to AI systems.
TechFreedom
Helping organisations understand their technology dependencies and start making informed choices about digital sovereignty.
FlowLance - AI-Powered Freelance Business Intelligence
Cashflow forecasting, opportunity assessment, and proposal intelligence for freelancers

Shared frameworks

I share what I learn. These are all available under Creative Commons:

  • Garden of Ideas — A facilitation device using organic metaphors
  • Organisational Resilience Toolkit — 9 principles for navigating uncertainty
  • Principles of Good Data — A framework for thinking about data
  • Theory of Change — Demystified — Making theories of change accessible
  • Collaboration Spectrum — For mapping how organisations work together
